Space Compass is an object that belongs in the “Cabinet of Curiosities” of the future. Space is set to become the travel destination of the next generation of explorers. Instead of being guided by North and South, the compass will need to have a 360° range of motion to guide the user to their desired destination.
In collaboration with Andrew Edwards, Harvey Jones and Manoj Kumar.
The Mechanism And Programming
The movement of the compass is powered by two stepper motors and corresponding gears to allow for full rotation. The motors were programmed using Python and Arduino and controlled by a Feather M0 Basic Proto board. The coordinates of the planets were created from open source information provided by NASA, and assigned to each button representing the planet.
